Youth & Teen Counselling in Vancouver

Compassionate, evidence-based support for young people aged 12–19

Growing up today comes with unique pressures — school stress, identity exploration, social media, family changes, overwhelming emotions, and increasingly complex world events. At Haven Wellness Collective in Vancouver, our youth-focused therapists provide a safe, non-judgmental space where teens and young adults can explore their feelings, develop coping tools, and receive support tailored to their needs.

We support young people of all backgrounds, including 2SLGBTQI+ youth, neurodivergent teens, and BIPOC youth, with culturally responsive and affirming care.

Why Youth Counselling Matters

Adolescence is a critical time for emotional, cognitive, and social development. Support during these years can prevent larger challenges later, improve self-esteem, and help young people build a strong foundation for adulthood.

Youth counselling can help with:

  • Anxiety, worries, or panic
  • Depression or low motivation
  • School stress, academic pressure, or perfectionism
  • Identity, gender, or sexuality exploration
  • Neurodivergence (ADHD, autism, etc.)
  • Family conflict or communication challenges
  • Friendships, social issues, or bullying
  • Trauma, grief, or loss
  • Emotional regulation & coping skills
  • Life transitions (moving, breakups, new school, parental separation)

Our Approach to Teen & Youth Therapy

We understand that sending your teen to counselling might be overwhelming or scary when they haven’t done that before. Parents often feel concerned about confidentiality and safety concerns for their youth and wonder what that looks like in therapy. We offer counselling that is:

Trauma-informed: We honour each young person’s safety, pacing, and autonomy.
Neurodiversity-affirming: We never pathologize difference. Instead, we help youth understand their strengths, challenges, and unique ways of experiencing the world.
2SLGBTQI+ & gender-affirming: Our therapists are trained to support queer, trans, and questioning youth with affirming, inclusive care.
✓ Collaborative and youth-centered: We take time to build trust and adapt sessions to each young person’s personality, comfort level, and goals.
✓ Strength-based: We help youth identify their inner resources, improve resilience, and feel more empowered in their daily lives.

Is Youth Counselling Right for Your Teen?
Reaching out early can make a profound difference. Consider booking a session if your teen is:

  • Withdrawn, overwhelmed, or avoiding activities
  • Struggling socially or academically
  • Feeling anxious, sad, or stressed
  • Navigating big feelings without tools
  • Asking for someone “neutral” to talk to
  • Going through identity, gender, or life changes
  • Feeling misunderstood or unsupported
  • Showing signs of burnout or emotional exhaustion
  • Experiencing changes in your family structure – divorce, grief, blending of families

What Youth Counselling Looks Like

Depending on the client’s age and preference, sessions may involve:

  • Talk therapy
  • Artistic or creative expression
  • Skills-based approaches (CBT, DBT, ACT)
  • Psychoeducation around emotions, identity, or neurodivergence
  • Mind-body strategies to support regulation
  • Support for executive function skills
  • Collaborative family sessions when helpful (with the youth’s consent)
  • Trauma therapy such as EMDR, OEI, or somatic therapy that are adapted for youth

Parent & Caregiver Involvement

For younger teens, involving parents or caregivers can be helpful. We collaborate by:

  • Offering guidance on communication
  • Supporting emotional connection at home
  • Sharing strategies that help (while respecting confidentiality)
  • Providing resources for family-wide wellbeing

For older teens and young adults, we prioritize confidentiality, involving caregivers only when appropriate and with the youth’s consent. Our ethics codes as Registered Clinical Counsellors is central to our counselling with youth. We communicate clearly with caregivers while protecting the youth’s privacy and autonomy and make the limits of confidentiality clear from the very beginning to youth and parents.
